Elissa Anthony
Biography

Elissa’s unique impressionist style developed over many years of study at George Brown College in Toronto through ten years living and studying fine art in England and visiting major galleries in Europe. Her 1997 move to Vancouver Island inspired her interpretation of the Vancouver Island landscapes, seascapes and flora.
Elissa’s wide range of formal art skills, generosity of spirit and delightful sense of humour make her an inspiring teacher for art students of all skill and age ranges. She teaches oil and acrylic painting to adults and children at her home studio, The MonElissa Studio in Bowser, BC.
Elissa exhibits in several galleries on the island (listed here). She has been featured on the cover of “Island Arts” magazine and is featured on the back cover of the magazine representing “Englishmen River Gallery” in the winter 2009 quarterly issue of Island Arts. Elissa has won awards of merit and excellence for her work, but the ones that mean the most to her are the Peoples Choice awards.
Elissa started teaching with some apprehension while living in Nanaimo 12 years ago.
“…what I lacked in experience I made up with enthusiasm … a class for the kids was part drawing and painting; part writing – they would write a little story and then illustrate it. Oh some of those stories were too funny and the pictures that went with them just made my day. I found teaching was very challenging but rewarding.
After moving to Bowser I was asked to teach by Lloyd Major of the “Major Art Gallery” in Parksville. It was a delightful experience. The classes were smaller groups. I found this far more rewarding for both the students and myself. I was able to sit with each student and work with them individually on their art projects. I have taken that philosophy to heart and only offer classes of 4 or 5 since moving my teaching here to the MonElissa Studio.
My students inspire me with their energy and willingness to learn. Sometimes I can see the lights go on as they grasp something new. At times my studio is just abuzz with creative energy. I have had some exceptional students. They all come for different reasons. Several have become professional artists themselves. It gives me a feeling of fulfillment to be part of that process, to have shown a person how to view the world in a more detailed/observant way. I wish all of them well.
Teaching keeps my creative energy high. I soak it up like a sponge and often times find myself painting long after my students leave.”
